Myristica fragrans spice, benefit of plant and seed for health improvement

The nutmegs Myristica are a genus of evergreen trees indigenous to tropical southeast Asia and Australasia. They are important for two spices derived from the fruit, nutmeg and mace. Myristica fragrans appears to have sexual enhancing properties.

Myristica fragrans and bone health
Machilin A isolated from Myristica fragrans stimulates osteoblast differentiation.
Planta Med. 2009 Feb;
This study evaluated the stimulatory effects of machilin A and structurally related lignans isolated from Myristica fragrans on osteoblast differentiation. These data suggest that lignans isolated from Myristica fragrans have anabolic activity in bone metabolism.

Myristica fragrans spice research studies
An experimental study of sexual function improving effect of Myristica fragrans Houtt. (nutmeg).

Myristica fragrans Houtt. (nutmeg) has been mentioned in Unani medicine to be of value in the management of male sexual disorders. The present study was undertaken to evaluate the aphrodisiac effect of 50% ethanolic extract of Myristica fragrans along with its likely adverse effects and acute toxicity using various animal models. The suspension of the extract was administered (100, 250 and 500 mg/kg, p.o.) to different groups of male rats daily for seven days. The female rats involved in mating were made receptive by hormonal treatment. The general mating behaviour, libido and potency were studied and compared with the standard reference drug sildenafil citrate. The resultant significant and sustained increase in the sexual activity of normal male rats without any conspicuous adverse effects indicates that the 50% ethanolic extract of Myristica fragrans possesses aphrodisiac activity, increasing both libido and potency, which might be attributed to its nervous stimulating property. The present study thus provides a scientific rationale for the traditional use of nutmeg in the management of male impotence and sexual disorders.

Effects of macelignan isolated from Myristica fragrans Houtt. on UVB-induced matrix metalloproteinase-9 and cyclooxygenase-2 in HaCaT cells.

UVB irradiation (290-320 nm) is the most damaging component of the UV spectrum and causes both direct and indirect damage to the basal cell layer of the epidermis; this results in the activation of a number of signaling pathways involved in pathophysiological processes in the skin, such as photoaging and inflammation. In photoaging UVB irradiation promotes degradation of the extracellular matrix (ECM) by matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs) and, in inflammation, UVB irradiation promotes the expression of inducible cyclooxygenase (COX-2), leading to overproduction of inflammatory mediators. OBJECTIVE: We first investigated the protective effects of macelignan from Myristica fragrans Houtt. on immortalized human keratinocytes (HaCaT) against UVB damage. We then explored the inhibitory effects of macelignan on UVB-induced MMP-9 and COX-2 and investigated the molecular mechanism underlying those effects. Our results suggest that macelignan protects skin keratinocytes from UVB-induced damage and inhibits MMP-9 and COX-2 expression by attenuating the activation of MAPKs and PI3K/Akt.
